Abhishek Garg - Market Expansion Manager

Abhishek Garg joined Amazon Web Services (AWS) in March 2022 to lead the growth strategy for Eastern Oregon data center facilities. The Eastern Oregon portfolio was comprised of 1,000 acres (accumulated over 10 years) across multiple locations. Leveraging research skills from my previous role at Ernst & Young, he began identifying new sites for expansion.

By March 2023, he had identified expansion options in several new locations across three additional counties. He earned trust and built long-term relationships with local jurisdictions (city, county, and port authorities), aligning our expansion plans with their 20-year goals. This resulted in identifying an additional 1,800 acres of suitable land for new facilities. He led these transactions, collaborating with stakeholders from legal, power, water, fiber, construction, civil, and design teams to ensure feasibility. Entering new markets required extensive groundwork, as we needed to negotiate fresh agreements for real estate, water, development, and taxes with landowners, cities, and counties.

With support from leadership and stakeholder teams, he secured 1,300 acres by November 2024, with negotiations ongoing for the remaining 500 acres. This market expansion provides a 10-year supply of data center capacity to support AI growth in the region. His efforts in securing these sites for capacity delivery transformed Eastern Oregon from a constrained to a healthy region, significantly improving AWS's ability to meet growing customer demand.

Identifying and securing such a large amount of suitable land in just over two years represents a remarkable achievement for the entire team. This accelerated timeline for site acquisition is unprecedented in our industry and positions AWS for continued growth and success in the region.
